Paul, who attends Robin Park Leisure Centre and Wigan Life Centre has been on an amazing journey to get to where he is today, as he explained:“In 2011, aged 37, I suffered kidney failure after being diagnosed with an immune system condition called IgA nephropathy. In March 2012 I received a kidney transplant from my eldest sister, Catherine who saved my life.’ “Shortly after I was referred to Wigan Life Centre gym by my doctor, where I have trained in the swimming pool and gym ever since. I also train at Robin Park Leisure Centre, and both facilities and the dedicated staff have been important in the build up to the World and British Transplant Games I’ve competed in.’ “I’ve been playing badminton at Robin Park and swimming at Wigan Life Centre for a number of years now. The facilities are excellent for training and the staff have always encouraged me to ‘give it a go’. I’ll be competing in swimming, 100m running, 800m running and javelin later this year when the British Games take place in Scotland, and I’d like to thank Stephen Dixon for all of his help in getting me the opportunity to train on the track at Robin Park.” “Inspiring healthy lifestyles leisure centres are here to give you as much support as you need, whether it’s recovering from a transplant and excelling worldwide like Paul, or just taking those first steps into fitness.’
When Chase Leisure Centre opened in March 1974 it was just a swimming pool, a far cry from today’s sports hall, fitness studios, gym, sauna and indoor bowling!
To John Guest though, it’s always been his sanctuary of exercise no matter how big or small, after he signed up to a membership 43 years ago.
Even after retiring in 1991, John is still putting in the lengths in the pool and racking up the miles on the indoor cycle, five times a week… now that’s commitment!

After a hip replacement last year and six weeks of physio, Arlene Clure joined Selby Leisure Centre and has since lost 6-stone in weight!
Her hard work and dedication through a gym programme and Move it and Lost it, coupled with help and guidance from staff at the centre, has garnered incredible results.
In Arlene’s own words, she is ‘absolutely loving life’:
“To my horror I was 16st 11lbs and knew I need to act quickly. I had a gym induction at Selby Leisure Centre and a programme was developed to suit my needs, that’s when I discovered the Move It and Lose It classes which I started to take part in twice a week. The difference the classes made to my recovery were incredible and I don’t even have any visible signs of the hip replacement when I walk.”
“I’m absolutely loving life now and I’d just like to say a big thank you to my fellow members and the amazing staff who have been so supportive.” At Inspiring healthy lifestyles leisure centres we pride ourselves on putting you in the driving seat, allowing you to try as efficiently and conveniently to suit your fitness goals.
David Maggs’ has been out to buy a whole new wardrobe.
Well, when you’ve dropped a whopping four stone thanks to a regular regime of diet and exercise, you’re going to need some new clothes.
The fighting fit 62-year-old from Billinge has plenty of reasons to be thrilled with his new size and shape. It really has given him a new lease of life.
These days you’ll regularly find David down at Ashton Leisure Centre, pounding away the miles on the treadmill or exercise bike.
But a few short years ago, it was very different story.
It was a leisurely stroll up Billinge Hill that first gave David the inkling that all was not right.
“I arrived in a terrible state, sweating and struggling to breathe.” David said. “I walked back home slowly, had a shower and dug out the bathroom scales.”
The tale of the tape had David weighing in at 14st, 2lbs.“When you’re 5ft, 3ins tall that’s not good,” he added. “I had been overweight for a long time, but decided to do something about it.”
Before he set out on his fitness journey, delivery driver David did the sensible thing and went to see his GP. After a medical and tests he was hit with the news that he had Type 2 Diabetes.
“I went home in a daze,” he said. “I was poked, prodded, wired up to various machines and given more kit and medicines than I care to remember.”
David says he piled the pounds on when he left work to become a full time carer for mum Edna.
Now the challenge was on to shed some weight and bring the condition under control.
David’s first move was to buy a bike and he was soon eating up the miles on the roads around his home. But it was at the Inspiring healthy lifestyles gym that he found everything he needed.
“The cycling was fine but in the cold and the bad weather I needed something else,” he said. “The gym at Ashton was perfect for me.”
David was soon making friends with the staff and regulars.
“I love going to the gym,” said David. “It’s a complete mix, there’s people of all ages and all levels of fitness. We spur each other on.”
By pushing and challenging his own limits, 55-year-old Michael Elliot saw a rapid improvement in his fitness levels in just 30-minute spells.
Michael enrolled on the Les Mills GRIT Series at Rugeley Leisure Centre, with the high intensity programme helping him to lower his resting heart rate and blood pressure, improving his quality of life both physically and mentally.
Although tough at first, Michael explained just how much he’s loved his workouts: “I was offered the opportunity to shake up my routine and GRIT has been the perfect way to change old habits. The first session was difficult, I’m not going to lie, but with the encouragement of staff and trainers at the centre I was always ready to keep on pushing.”
“I was on a high after the first session because of the challenging element, and having other people around me provided great support.”
“I’ve noticed lots of benefits to my health and I generally feel more energetic. Personally, I do like a challenge, and although GRIT isn’t for absolute beginners, if you want a challenge and to push yourself to your own limits, I would definitely recommend it.’
Inspiring healthy lifestyles leisure centres are here to offer you support, tailoring your fitness journey to match your goals. Whether it’s weight loss, or a fitness challenge like Michael’s, contact your nearest centre to find out how we can help you.

“Lifting is for me,” is Emma Halford’s mantra.
After losing three stone through running, completing the ‘Couch to 5K’ app and taking part in numerous classes, Emma has found her passion for weightlifting.
“What an amazing experience,” Emma started. “The trainers make everything perfect to suit me and what I want to achieve, and after one weights class with my trainer Lisa I knew I’d found my passion.
